A couple of years ago; I was given a small amount of Comfrey from a Mennonite woman that I met. I had not even heard of Comfrey before.
I recently started learning a little about this plant. There are many medicinal uses for this plant but depending on when it it harvest; it can be poisonous so until I learn more about it I will just use it topically. It's wonderful effect topically alone makes this plant amazing.
Also after 2 years; I now have it popping up in other places. I don't mind because it is a large beautiful plant. If you want a plant that makes lots of plants this one does it.
This plant is known to help with skin ulcers, wounds, joint inflammation, bruises, rheumatoid arthritis, swollen veins (phlebitis), gout, and fractures. I have read that it rejuvenates cells and makes the above ailments heal better and faster.
My husband has adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) He says it does make his shoulder feel better.
What I do is cut some leaves off of the plant. I bring some water to a boil and steep the leaves in the water for a few minutes. I let the leaves cool till they aren't burning hot. I then put something such as a paper towel between the skin and leaves because the leaves are scratchy. Leave it on the skin for around 20 minutes maybe more if you want.I am not sure the proper timing.
Here is a warning from WebMD "Comfrey is a plant. Even though this plant contains poisonous chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), the leaf, root, and root-like stem (rhizome) are used to make medicine. The amount of PAs found in comfrey changes according to the time of harvesting and the age of the plant. The roots have 10 times higher amounts of PAs than the leaves. Some products labeled “common comfrey” or Symphytum officinale actually contain the more poisonous “prickly comfrey” (Symphytum asperum) or “Russian comfrey” (Symphytum x uplandicum) species." www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-295-COMFREY.aspx?activeIngredientId=295&activeIngredientName=COMFREY
As I learn more about this plant I will post more info in this thread on it.If you have useful info about this plant. If you have any further information about this plant it would be appreciated.
